PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Over the years, Bay Design has assisted the Newport News Jewish Community Center with its complex by providing design concepts, phasing plans, construction documents and construction administration services.  After the success of the first day care facility Bay Design produced for the Jewish Community Center, Bay Design was the obvious choice to convert two offices and a gym lobby into two classrooms for the UJCVP Preschool.  The existing building was a pre-engineered structure with unattractive metal panels and a masonry wall for the front.  Bay Design’s project architect fashioned a new playful appearance to the exterior walls by means of applying fiber cement cladding over the existing walls.  This idea allowed the building to be given a new contemporary identity without impeding on the construction budget. In addition to giving the exterior walls texture and color, a visual rhythm was incorporated by the addition of parapets, entrance canopies and circular windows.  However, the architectural rhythm was not designed just to create visual interest.  Its intent is to inspire children who will use the classrooms by encouraging cognitive thinking that’s crucial for a young mind to develop logic and reasoning skills.
